Abstract

AIMS: The aim of this article is to review the main aspects of the association of oxidative stress with metabolic syndrome and related diagnostic factors. SOURCE OF DATA: Scientific original and review articles from the MedLine/Pubmed and LILACS databases. SUMMARY OF FINDINGS: Several lines of evidence suggest an association between oxidative stress and medical conditions such as cardiovascular disease, diabetes mellitus, cancer, respiratory diseases and neurological disorders. It has also been postulated that oxidative stress influences the manifestation of metabolic syndrome, characterized by changes in the metabolism of carbohydrates, lipids and proteins, including pro-coagulant and inflammatory effects. CONCLUSIONS: The association of oxidative stress with adiposity and insulin resistance suggests its influence on the appearance of metabolic syndrome. Sedentary lifestyle and poor dietary habits seem to contribute to the increase in oxidative stress and consequent risk of developing cardiovascular disease.
