Abstract

Aims: To report the experience with sodium nitroprusside in the treatment of acute ischemic cerebral stroke. Methods: A retrospective study, conducted by review of hospital charts, included patients who suffered an acute ischemic cerebral stroke and received thrombolytic therapy with alteplase, from May 2005 to July 2007. Results: Of 48 patients who meet the inclusion criteria, 15 received sodium nitroprusside to control the arterial pressure. One patient (6,7%) died, and none had symptomatic intracerebral hemorrhage. The median score for National Institute of Health Stroke Scale at the arrival was 10, and at discharge was 2,8. Conclusions: Sodium nitroprusside in the acute ischemic cerebral stroke was applicable and safe. Larger and prospective studies are necessary to corroborate these results and evaluate its potential protective properties.
