Abstract

Objective: This study aimed to evaluate kinematic differences in children’s gait with and without a backpack.
Materials and methods: The gait of four 9-year old children was analyzed with and without a backpack by means of biomechanical equipment. Backpack load employed was controlled. Gait evaluation included: steps, gait speed and angular variation of the knee.
Results: Results showed that the backpack did not alter children’s gait.
Conclusion: This study suggests that the recommended mass of the backpacks that should not exceed 10% of the body mass of the children is correct, since it did not cause any significant change in children’s gait.
