Abstract

Objective: The aim of this work was to present a literature review about B12 vitamin focusing its importance for elderly patients, deficiency manifestations and therapeutics.
Data source: Scientific articles and books published from 1977 to 2004 were reviewed.
Data synthesis: B12 vitamin deficiency occurs frequently among elderly people with prevalence higher then 20%. Nevertheless it is often unrecognized because clinical manifestations are subtle and delayed diagnosis results in serious hematological and neurological consequences.
Conclusions: Screening of vitamin B12 deficiency is an important procedure in the clinical evaluation of elderly patients, as the early diagnosis can improve the patient’s quality of life by avoiding neurological and hematological disturbances.
KEY WORDS: AGED; GERIATRICS; VITAMIN B12 DEFICIENCY.
