Abstract

In the present article, we investigate the framings incident on sick bodies during three health crises: the yellow fever outbreak (1849-1906), the Spanish flu (1918-1919) and the covid-19 (2020-). The investigation is carried out from the operation of montage, according to the postulates of Georges Didi-Huberman. We argue that this method, by allowing approximations between heterogeneous scenes, helps us to frame the framing, to think about its operationalities and fractures. We articulated and related photographs from the iconographic collection of the Oswaldo Cruz Institute and images from the documentary Estamos te esperando em casa (We are waiting for you at home) (2021), by Cecília da Fonte and Marcelo Pedroso. Throughout the investigation, we realized that, despite the predominance of biopolitical framings in the images, it was possible to perceive a potency of figuration, especially when the medical team activates tactics to recreate conditions of contact, either between doctors and patients, or between patients and their families. Certain images hint at an agency that produces gaps and intervals in consensual semantics, bringing other mechanisms of legibility of history, of the common, and of experience, which differ from the explanatory frames of representation that add symbolic violence to subjects who are already daily targets of oppressions.
