Abstract

This article studies the dissemination of the disinformation campaign “Laranjal do Boulos” published during the debate of Folha de S.Paulo and UOL on the first round of the São Paulo mayor election. The theoretical framework integrates the academic research on disinformation, coordination tactics, and astroturfing. The data were collected from Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube, capturing public mentions from a list of terms surrounding the case. The methodological procedures build on digital methods cross-platform analysis techniques and combine descriptive statistics and social network analysis. The results suggest coordination between Russomano’s campaign and Oswaldo Eustaquio to create a live momentum of false accusations against Guilherme Boulos. In addition, the findings describe the temporal patterns of circulation and the spread of transmedia content. The remainder of the paper debates the challenges of moderating disinformation in social media and suggests future avenues for cross-platform studies.
