Abstract

This essay deals with the theme of mass culture and its properties in the contemporary world through the perspectives of three important thinkers: Noam Chomsky, Umberto Eco and Marshall McLuhan. Chomsky's analysis of the impact of mass media on political reality is discussed and counter-examples of Brazilian culture are provided. Eco's insights into mass culture properties are addressed and illustrated. McLuhan's cool couple is considered in the context of mass culture, and finally the three visions are applied to the modern synthesis of all media: the Internet.
