Abstract

This article focuses on the description of the process of elision of the vowel / a / in the Brazilian Portuguese personal variety. The analysis implemented is based on the theoretical-methodological model of Quantitative Sociolinguistics. In this text, the focus is on the structural issues that guide the application of the process. The results show that the linguistic restrictions - extension of the first word of the sequence, accent, word type, prosodic constituents and vowel quality - are the most relevant to the application of the elision, thus revealing itself as a process Without major social determinants.

Possui graduação no Curso de Licenciatura Plena em Letras pela Universidade Federal da Paraíba e é Mestre em Lingüística, pelo Programa de Pós-graduação em Lingüística (Proling), dessa mesma universidade. Tem experiência na área de Letras, com ênfase em Lingüística e Sociolingüística.
