THERE ARE NOT STORIES FOR CHILDREN – REPRESENTATIONS OF CHILDHOOD IN LITERATURE, AUDIOVISUALS AND THE ARTS

Since the invention of childhood in modern times, (Ariès, 1978), we have witnessed the transformation in the form and the status of the presence and representation of children in narratives in different languages, which, much like the notion of childhood itself, vary according to their geopolitical, socio-cultural, and economic contexts, and also undergo changes over time, resulting in a multiplicity of childhoods. In this context, we propose this dossier as a space for the convergence of theoretical-critical discussions on the representations of childhood in literature, audiovisuals and the arts, coming from different perspectives and fields of knowledge. We are particularly interested in reflections on how these representations intersect different perspectives and identity markers (class, gender, sexuality, race/ethnicity, etc.) with the experience of being a child, and about how these representations and the narratives that compose them – which are predominantly created by adults – articulate hegemonic adult-centrism, whether or not they involve children in their development. How does the otherness of childhood resist these narratives? Above all, we hope that the discussions presented in this dossier will help us to reflect collectively on how representations of childhood challenge the violence, inequalities, vulnerabilities, and precariousness that impact this specific period of human life globally. We aim to explore the implications of these challenges as we think about building a world that embraces all childhoods.
