On freedom, free will and determinism in Ernst Tugendhat

Abstract

The current paper has the purpose to explain the position and the possible contributions of the philosopher Ernst Tugendhat on the contemporary debate about free will and determinism. The paper has the following structure: [i] the first part develops Tugendhat’s structure of the “relationship to one own self”, a constructus that makes possible articulate the notion of freedom in the human being; [ii] the second part situates this purpose in the contemporary debate through a discussion between authors such as R. Chisholm, R. Kane, H. Frankfurt, P. Strawson and E. Stein.
