CENSORSHIP AND THE THEATER OF MANUEL BRETÓN DE LOS HERREROS

La influencia de la censura sobre el teatro de Manuel Bretón de los Herreros puede dividirse en dos categorías. Durante el reino de Fernando VII (1823-1833) la "censura frailera" prohibió que Bretón incluyera en sus comedias "verdades muy de bulto," de manera que sus obras se limitan a temas e intrigas familiares, por ejempl?, la elección de un novio por una joven en frente de los reparos de sus parientes. A partir de 1833 los reglamentos de censura siguen siendo, a primera vista, sumamente duros, pero en realidad eran aflojados, permitiendo que Bretón ensanchara sus temas, hasta incluir "flaquezas ministeriales," instituciones como "el editor responsable," embrollos de carlistas, maulas de varios líderes y defectos del mundo periodista. A partir de 1833 las "verdades muy de bulto" abundan en la comedia bretoniana y abren el camino a un humorismo mucho más amplio. GF
