LAS REFUNDICIONES DE DON MANUEL BRETÓN DE LOS HERREROS

M. Bretón de los Herreros escribió diez refundiciones de comedias por Lope de Vega (dos), Calderón (cuatro), Tirso de Molina, Coello, Moreto y Ruiz de Alarcón. En una nota a sus obras coleccionadas de 1850 habla despectivamente de la práctica de refundir comedias antiguas, tarea “ingrata y estéril”. No obstante, sus refundiciones de Lope y otros comediógrafos figuraban mucho en su educación dramática. En los primeros años imitó minuciosamente a su ídolo, “el inmortal Inarco” (Moratín), empleando prosa, romances, o redondillas; pero más tarde, parecido a los grandes comediógrafos de antaño, introdujo una versificación más amplia en su teatro. De veras, la inspiración de sus comedias proviene en gran parte del siglo de oro.
