We intend to discuss the concept of frontier in the colonial Rio Grande do Sul, suggesting an alternative understanding of the southem settlement, supported on the eighteenth century parish records. It seems to be more appropriate if we consider the colonial frontier space as a "moving frontier", with an intense human and economic circulation, within a diversified demographical context.
