Patriarchy and intersectionality
the public and the private as a theoretical point of convergence

The paper discusses the importance of the public and private domains in feminist analysis, highlighting the presence of the dichotomy between these spheres in theories of patriarchy and intersectionality. The separation between the public and the private has historical roots and is related to the oppression of women in the private sphere and their exclusion from the public sphere. The exclusion of women from traditional political theory and the invisibility of their gender identities are critiqued, pointing to the importance of recognizing the influence of gender in the public sphere and the economy. The opposition between public and private is explored in feminist studies and permeates the theories of patriarchy and intersectionality, expressed here by the writings of Pateman, Okin, Fraser, Walby, Hill Collins, Crenshaw, Davis and Bilge; highlighting the potential for complementarity between both theoretical currents.
