For a Global Approach to the History of French Higher Education

Since the 1970s, the contemporary period of the history of French higher education has been the subject of major French and foreign studies but has yet to benefi t from anywhere near as much research as the other levels of education. This article presents a critical panorama of research in this fi eld and proposes a typology by period for the contexts of production and the dominant thematics as well as considering the causes of this lesser interest. The presentation of current trends in research enables the author to suggest orientations in the areas which should be pursued in the coming years and lead her to advocate a global approach to the issue.
