Abstract
ABSTRACT
The present article discusses the inclusion of indigenous people in higher education, from the perspective of social inclusion, arguing the consequent necessity of affirmative polices in education, in the context of a multicultural country such as Brazil. Initially questioning the problematic of the historical exclusion to which indigenous people were, to a large extent, submitted, the text suggests a reflection that problematizes the presence of students until now considered as “strangers” to the academic environment (such as indigenous people, among others). Besides emphasizing the access and permanence of these “new students”, the article proposes the challenge of thinking about institutional initiatives that accept as a possibility the dialogue among different knowledges. In other words, a process of inclusion that welcomes “the different”, opening itself to questioning and necessary changes.
Key words – Indigenous people; higher education; cultural diversity.
