Abstract

This article evaluates the structure and potential of the furniture industry of the city of Boa Vista (Roraima). The idea was to make suggestions to enhance the competitiveness of the sector, through improvements in materials, labor, technology and design, to add greater value to the final product. Questionnaires were applied to 19 companies affiliated to the Union of Industries of the State of Roraima Carpentry; 15 companies responded to the questionnaires. The literature review focused on the theory of location, growth poles theory and endogenous local development, focusing on the role of innovation and local actors. The raw material comes from the interior of Roraima; 80% of production is for the city of Boa Vista and 20% is for the rest of the state. It was concluded that the industry needs many improvements, both in technology, with more modern machinery, as the point of view of management and logistics. The main difficulties faced by the sector are labor-skilled, working capital and equipment (production is semi-craft). The sector needs support to official bodies, such as technical assistance and credit.
