Abstract

J.R.R. Tolkien is known for his influential works in fantasy literature, such as The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings, which comprise his vast legendarium. This fictional universe addresses a diverse range of themes, including conflicts between good and evil, sacrifice, friendship, and free will. Although dominated by male characters, such as Frodo, Gandalf, Aragorn, and others, the presence of significant female figures, such as Éowyn, is crucial to the depth of the narrative. Éowyn, in particular, challenges gender conventions by aiming for an active role in the War of the Ring, symbolizing courage and determination. However, her representation also reveals an underlying tension, highlighting the limitations of gender equality within the Tolkienian universe. This study seeks to explore Éowyn's complex role in Tolkien's work, offering a critical analysis that examines both her narrative importance and the broader issues related to gender representation. In doing so, it aims to contribute to a deeper understanding of Tolkien's work through this character.
