Brazilian foreign policy for South America: differences between Cardoso and Lula

Abstract

Since the early 1990’s, Brazil assumes South America as the regional component of its international identity. The “southamericanity” has been manipulated mainly from 2000, with a series of initiatives put in place by the Brazilian government. However, there are substantial differences between the strategies of Brazilian foreign policy for the region between Lula and Cardoso, which has to be underlined the choice for the institutionalization of regional multilateralism in Lula’s administration.
