Religion and politics in Peru after Fujimori

Abstract

The 1990 elections in Peru marked a new fact in the political action of the evangelical people in that country. A considerable number of evangelical people, from different churches, got to get in the House of Representatives and a Baptist preacher was elected Vice-president. From this year on the evangelical people started to take part in every election by introducing candidates. This article analyses the preceding of the political participation of evangelical people in elections and their progressive incursion on the political practice. It takes into consideration the churches’ characteristics of the candidates, the political practice motivation, the parties involved and finally, the number of votes put in motion.
