Abstract

The present work is part of the results of an ethnographic research carried out in the public network of fab labs in the city of São Paulo. I present the Labor, Youth and Digital Manufacturing (JTFD) program, maintained through a 2004 municipal law that established work grants for youth in the city. The text is divided into two parts, in the first, the general characteristics of the program, audience and objectives are presented through the analysis of the program's biannual projects in the period from 2019 to 2024. In the second part, a broader reflection is made about the relationship between work, technical and humanistic education and what type of social inclusion occurs at this intersection. Finally, even though the program has its internal contradictions, which are evident in the short circuits between languages and practices in fab labs, it points out ways to think about ways of integrating technical and humanistic knowledge within the scope of formal education, as well as overcoming the historical and socioeconomic hierarchies linked to these different knowledge.

Rafael Malhão, Federal University of Pelotas (UFPel), Pelotas, Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil.

He holds a doctorate and master's degree in Sociology from the State University of Campinas (Unicamp), a bachelor's degree in Social Sciences from the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul (UFRGS), and is a substitute professor of Sociology at the Federal University of Pelotas (UFPel).
