Abstract

Bargain is both a category of analysis in anthropological theory and a native category in the backlands of the São Francisco River. As a category of analysis, bargain is essentially ambiguous; as a native term, bargain in the backlands of the São Francisco River is a form of relationship established in exchange, morally questionable, although widespread, expressed in dynamics of pact and promise that usually start from apparent individual interests, but that when composing a circuit of local relationships, integrating festivals, celebrations, sacrifices, penances and myths of a locality, its collective dimension is revealed. In the webs of religion and economy, this work intends to explore the multiple faces of bargain in the backlands of the São Francisco River and, with that, reactivate it within the scope of anthropological theory.
