Abstract

I aim to demonstrate two methodological contributions of Henri Lefebvre’s rhythmanalysis to the problem of how society transforms itself through the mediation of social practices that (re)produce themselves in and through the more or less technological objects and spaces that are entailed in the everyday life of cities engulfed by the possibility of modernity. First I elucidate rhythmanalysis, and its connection with Lefevre’s thought. Hence the theoretical peculiarity of my statement will come to the fore. Its empirical pertinence, though, are briefly shown in the second section. Based on photographic and ethnographic data of my research on the present-day public streets and squares of the historically oldest São Paulo perimeter (Frehse, 2011), I point out what human bodies that physically cross or stay there on a regular basis may disclose about the rhythm of sociocultural changes in this present-day megacity – and, thus, about rhythmanalysis as a way of empirical apprehension of clues of the social change which is historically possible in the everyday life experienced in urban space.

Fraya Frehse é professora do Departamento de Sociologia da Universidade de São Paulo, onde coordena o Núcleo de Estudos e Pesquisas em Sociologia do Espaço. Bacharel e licenciada em ciências sociais, mestre e doutora em antropologia social pela mesma Universidade, Frehse é pós-doutora em sociologia (da cidade) pela Freie Universität Berlin e pela Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin sob os auspícios da Alexander von Humboldt Foundation. Foi pesquisadora visitante na Universidade de Oxford, na École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales, na Freie Universität Berlin, na Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin e na Technische Universität Darmstadt, tendo sido titular da Cátedra “Sérgio Buarque de Holanda” de Estudos Brasileiros na Freie Universität Berlin. Com publicações em línguas diversas sobre temáticas relativas à cidade, ao espaço, à vida cotidiana e à imagem fotográfica, ela é também autora de Ô da Rua! O Transeunte e o Advento da Modernidade em São Paulo (Edusp, 2011) e de O Tempo das Ruas na São Paulo de Fins do Império (Edusp, 2005), além de organizadora de três dossiês sobre estudos urbanos e socioespaciais na América Latina em revistas acadêmicas nacionais e internacionais.
