Cognitive aspects of low grade gliomas: case study

Abstract

Gliomas are primary tumors originated on the glial tissue and they may appear on the brainstem. Patients with low grade gliomas show decrease in the cognitive functions, executive, psicomotoras and memory. The objective of this case study was to investigate the cognitive functions of patient with an image based diagnosis (Magnetic Ressonance Imaging) of a brainstem low grade glioma. Method: The patient was submitted to the neurological evaluation and neuropsychological evaluation in which the executive functions, intellectual, space planning was evaluated, motor praxia and visual memory of short term. Results: The data obtained and argued demonstrated damage of the executive and motor functions. Conclusion: The main results demonstrated damage of the executive functions. It is necessary to follow the evolution of patients with low grade glioma and to consider strategies for the neuropsychological rehabilitation that keep the quality of life.
