The present study investigated maternal feelings and expectations during second pregnancy. Twenty-one mothers, who were in the third trimester of her second child pregnancy and whose firstborn was in preschool, took part in the study. All participants lived in the metropolitan area of Porto Alegre (RS), were married and their husband was the father of their two children. The mothers were interviewed individually and their answers were examined through qualitative content analysis. The structure of categories was derived from the literature as well as from the reading of the interviews. It was noticed that there are particularities with regard to maternal feelings and expectations in the context of the birth of a second child, especially in relation to the experience of pregnancy and maternal emotional involvement with the baby, due to the fact she already has a son. Clinical implications of the findings are also discussed.Downloads
