Abstract

Based on the importance of drawing attention to the prevalence of depression among teachers, this study identified work leaves of teachers from elementary schools in João Pessoa, (state of Paraíba, Brazil), due to mental disorders, specifically depression. It is a descriptive, retrospective, cross-sectional, quantitative study, based on the medical records of 414 teachers who took work leaves between 1999 and 2006 due to diagnoses of mental disorders. The results show that between 30 and 39 years old, 77.7% of the leaves were due other mental disorders and 22.3% were due to depression; between 40 and 49 years of age, these rates changed, with 46.7% of leaves granted as a result of other mental disorders and 53.3% due to depression; between 60 and 69 years of age, 33.3% of the leaves were granted for other mental disorders and 66.7% were due to depression. Among women, 50.5% of the allowances for mental disorders were due to depression.
