Abstract

Introduction: Physical mobility is one of the main indicators of health and quality of life in the elderly population, being directly influenced by factors such as muscle strength, balance, and walking ability. The aging process, combined with pathological conditions like sarcopenia, can significantly affect these aspects, increasing the risk of falls and impairing functionality. Objective: To find out about the physical mobility patterns of the lower limbs (LL) of elderly people in the community. Methodology: This is an epidemiological, cross-sectional, analytical, population-based study that assessed 75 elderly people of both sexes, aged ≥ 60 years, registered with, attending, and participating in the Community Center in southern Brazil. The assessment of sarcopenia was characterized as risk screening using the SARC-F, and physical mobility was assessed using the Timed Up and Go Test and the Short Physical Performance Battery – SPPB (balance, gait speed and sit/stand). Therefore, a correlation between chronological age and propensity to fall was proposed to scientifically emphasize these findings. Spearman’s correlation test was used to analyze the correlation between age and physical performance. Results: Statistical differences showed a propensity to fall using the TUG, characterized as a deficit in physical mobility for dynamic balance, which was not so evident in the correlation between age and SPPB. Conclusion: Elderly people in the community showed a deficit in gait speed with regard to dynamic balance control, which requires better postural control and is clearly associated with a propensity to fall.
