Aim: to verify the effects of therapy with respiratory stimulants in elderly people with depressive symptoms and self-reported vocal symptoms.
Methods: This is a clinical trial that evaluated the effects of voice therapy intervention for 8 weeks, once a week. The 51 participants of both sexes were allocated into three groups: the first performed the sound-based high-frequency oral oscillation technique for three minutes per session, the second group performed sound-based blowing in a silicone tube immersed in water for three minutes per session, the third group performed the two associated tasks of the previous groups, one minute and thirty seconds each. All participants did their respective tasks at home, twice a day. Participants recorded their voices for the GRBASI and responded to the instruments for tracking vocal changes in the elderly and the 10-item geriatric depression scale.
Results: In the geriatric depression scale and instrument for tracking vocal changes in the elderly, the results showed statistically significant differences in the post-intervention assessments, homogeneously between the groups. The GRBASI evaluation did not find statistically significant results.
Conclusion: The present study verified positive effects of therapy with respiratory stimulants in elderly people in relation to depressive symptoms and self-reported vocal symptoms. Showing that the techniques used can be low-cost therapeutic alternatives for voice therapy in the elderly.
