Population aging is advancing rapidly in Brazil, with the 2022 census showing a significant increase in the elderly population, particularly among those over 65 years old, whose proportion grew by 57.4% in the last 12 years. Currently, people aged 60 and older represent 15.8% of the population, highlighting the urgency of effective public policies to address the needs of this growing age group. Promoting physical activity is a key strategy to improve quality of life, foster autonomy, prevent falls, and reduce social isolation among the elderly. In Porto Alegre, the Physical Activity Incentive Program for the Elderly (PIAFI) emerges as a response to these challenges, inspired by successful models from countries like Spain and Portugal. Implemented with the support of the Municipal Elderly Fund and in partnership with PUCRS, PIAFI offers a multicomponent action plan aimed at promoting healthy aging. The program encompasses various physical modalities and focuses on addressing the functional, mental, and social needs of the elderly. In its first edition, PIAFI served 500 elderly people, generating positive impacts on the health and quality of life of participants, as well as their families and the community. Scientific and observational results point to PIAFI as an effective, practical, and replicable initiative that goes beyond promoting physical health, transforming the living conditions of the elderly and aligning with WHO guidelines for active and healthy aging.
