Social Perspective about Oppressors Discourses about Disability in University

Abstract

The oppressing discourses dominate the identity and the roles of people with disability in society. These narratives oppress the full integration of people with disability, not promoting diversity as a key element of social progress and development. Instead of being a contributor to changing the social discourse about disability, the academic institutions promote and encourage the biomedical vision of disability as biological and social deficit, hindering access to knowledge to this minority through active and passive discriminatory actions. Supported by empirical data and conceptual proposals, the main goal of this theoretical article is to present a critical perspective on the positivist assumptions about disability that, based on the Social Theory of Disability, eliminate the dominant and oppressive discourse that discriminates people with disability. At the end of the article, we present a model of critical analysis on disability in the university context.
