ABSTRACT
Hospital psychological practice: Demands and interventions This work analyzes the development of hospital psychological practice for collecting information on existing psychological demands as well as the resources used to deal with them. Seven hospital psychologists were interviewed. Additionally, the work carried out by three of them was submitted to observation. The obtained results were qualitatively analyzed through three synergic and systematic steps: description, inductive analysis, and critical analysis. The description brought out psychological demands such as the following: doubts and apprehension relative to diagnosis and hospitalization; preparation for surgery; adhesion to treatment; adaptation to new life conditions; coping with risk situations, death and mourning. The model of intervention followed is clinical, usually learnt in centers for psychotherapeutic formation. The inductive analysis emphasized that hospital psychologists who had greater autonomy and who relied on the assistance of psychology interns have introduced a higher degree of adaptation to their ways of acting towards patients. The critical analysis acknowledged that it is a recent area of practice, but it also indicated that the instruments used derive from and are shared with other professional contexts.
Key words: Hospital psychology; demands; interventions.
