O Primo Basílio. Atualizando uma espécie de ‘dicionário dos lugares-comuns’, a personagem pode mesmo, em nosso entender, considerar-se quase inteiramente construída pelo discurso da cortesia. Procuraremos, pois, aqui elucidar o modo como, neste romance de Eça, a convergência e o contraste entre tais códigos – nos domínios físico, discursivo, axiológico – são maioritariamente responsáveis pela criação do efeito irónico e pelo essencial do desenho da personagem.

The respectable Conselheiro Acácio, perhaps the most successful and lasting character of the Eça de Queirós’ fictional gallery, stands out first and foremost, by impeccable verbal and gestural courtesy. In this paper, we will try to understand and describe the peculiar use of courtesy and civility codes in the design of this immortal character in O Primo Basílio. Activating a sort of ‘dictionary of clichés’, the same character can, from our point of view, be considered almost entirely constructed by the civil codes of courtesy. Therefore, we look for elucidating how, in this novel by Eça, convergence and contrast among such codes – physical, discursive, axiological – are largely responsible for creating the ironic effect and for the essential designing of the character.
