Abstract

The aim of this article is to present the recent criticism of Leviathan's revisionist interpretation to the presuppositions of traditional or orthodox interpretation. The main presupposition of the orthodox approach is predominant selfishness or self-interest. This article is divided into two parts. In the first part, I present the arguments against the following assumptions arising from the interpretation based on self-interest: the state of nature as a dilemma of the prisoner of game theory; the political obligation justified by prudential reason; the irrelevance of religion to Hobbes's moral and political theory. In the last part, I demonstrates what are the reading criteria of Leviathan's revisionist interpretation that oppose the criteria of orthodox reading.
