El chiste cubano, antes del fenómeno revolucionário de 1959, tenía por objeto, solamente, el hacer reir. A partir del mismo y con el éxodo masivo de los cubanos hacia todas partes del globo, el chiste tomó dos derroteros definidos: en uno se cargó, sin perder lo risible, de elementos filosóficos o irónicos o pesimistas; en otro se convirtió en un chiste negro cuajado de amargura. El primero lo ilustra la novela del autor cubano exiliado, Alvaro de Villa, titulada: Los "pobresistos" Pobres; el segundo la del también autor exiliado Celedonio González: Los cuatro embajadores.
