Abstract

The objective of this study was to evaluate two resin-reinforced glass ionomer cements, Fuji Ortho LC and Fuji Ortho Band (GC América Corporation, Tokyo, Japan) in terms of shear bond strength and fluoride release. Sixty bovine permanent lower incisors were divided into three groups (n = 15). In Groups 1, 2, and 3 the bonding procedures were performed with Transbond XT, Fuji Ortho LC, and Fuji Ortho Band materials respectively. Next, the samples were submitted to bond strength testing at crosshead speed of 0.5 mm/minute. Fluoride release from such materials was measured during 28 days (1h, 24 h, 3, 7, 14, 21, and 28 days) by means of selective ion electrodes connected to an ion analyser. With respect to the shear bond strength (MPa), the results demonstrated statistical differences between groups 1 and 3 as well as between groups 2 and 3. With respect to the fluoride release, the results showed statistically significant results between groups 1 and 3 as well as between groups 2 and 3 for all time periods (p = 0.00). Also, the 3-day evaluation showed statistical differences between groups 1 and 2 regarding fluoride release (p = 0.00). Based on the results obtained in the present study, one can conclude that Transbond XT and Fuji Ortho materials have a better shear bond strength than the Fuji Ortho Band one, although the latter releases less fluoride. UNITERMS: glass ionomer cements; composite; shear strength; fluoride release.
