Objective: To describe the clinical-epidemiological profile of patients hospitalized for treatment of malignant oncological and hematological diseases, attended at a reference hospital in Porto Alegre.
Materials and Methods: A descriptive, cross-sectional study was carried out with the medical records of patients who underwent hospitalization between January 1st 2015 and June 31st 2017.
Results: A total of 296 patients were analyzed, of which 203 (68.58%) were new diagnoses. The median age at diagnosis was 6.3 years (P2.81-12.63), the majority being male (53.3%) and coming from the state of Rio Grande do Sul (97.30%). The main diagnoses were leukemia (31.8%), followed by tumors of the central nervous system (21.6%) and lymphoma (14.9%). Of the 296 patients, 14.2% had an indication for hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT). Twenty-five were able to do the procedure, 60% were autologous transplants and 40% allogeneic. Of the 65 patients who died during this period, 72.3% received palliative care.
Conclusion: The majority of the patients were white boys from the state of Rio Grande do Sul, with a diagnosis of leukemia. Considering that it is a reference center in neurosurgery, the results of the main diagnoses found resemble those of developed countries.
