Abstract

Objective: To investigate the experiences and expectations of morbidly obese individuals who participated in a preoperative physiotherapeutic program and who will undergo bariatric surgery (or reductive gastroplasty surgery).

Materials and Methods: Descriptive exploratory study with a qualitative approach, using the thematic focal group technique with data saturation sampling. The group was formed by obese individuals participating in the PREPARA Extension Program - Teaching, Research and Extension Nucleus in Pre and Post Operative Physical Therapy of Large Portions Surgeries, State University of Santa Catarina.

Results: It was verified that these individuals have expectations about the improvement of the general state of health and quality of sleep, mainly the improvement in the quality of life, including familiar aspects, sexual behaviors and physical activity.

Conclusion: The experiences and expectations presented by the individuals point out the difficulties experienced by the morbidly obese and tend to be minimized with the accomplishment of the bariatric surgery. Accompanying the behavior of everyday aspects assessed when individuals perform bariatric surgery may be an interesting and necessary future research topic.
