Objective: This study aimed to evaluate the nutritional value of the snacks consumed by schoolchildren during break time, at a private school, in São Paulo.
Materials and Methods: The sample consisted of 52 students of both genders in the 1st year of elementary school. We performed a quantitative analysis of the meal relative to the content of energy, carbohydrate, fiber, protein, lipid, sodium, calcium and iron. Also, we carry out qualitative analysis to identify the food groups consumed by students. Energy and nutrients intake data were compared to the parameters for snacks of the Brazilian School Feeding Program called: Programa Nacional de Alimentação Escolar (PNAE).
Results: It was found that children who buy snacks from the school cafeteria choose more energy foods compared to children who took snacks from home. The main food groups found in lunchboxes were cereals, milk and dairy products and artificial juices. Furthermore, energy and macronutrients intake are over the recommended level, with the exception of protein for boys, which is below the recommended level. The micronutrients values were below the recommendation for calcium and above the recommendation for iron.
Conclusion: The nutritional value of snacks consumed by schoolchildren during break time, at a private school in São Paulo, showed energy and macronutrients intake above the recommendation, except for protein for males, calcium intake lower than recommendation and iron intake was excessive. Despite the low waste and the few children who bought the snacks in the school cafeteria by choosing more energy foods compared to children who took snacks from home, the results showed inadequacies that point to the need of encouragement and implementation of nutritional education programs in schools to contribute to improvements in quality of life and food intake of children.
