Abstract

Objective: The present study aimed to analyze the knowledge of the companion of patients interned in the pediatric unit about hospital infection (HI).

Materials and Methods: This is an exploratory, descriptive study, with qualitative nature conducted with 09 companions of children interned in the Pediatric section of the Clemente de Faria University Hospital (HUCF), located in the city of Montes Claros, Minas Gerais. The data collection occurred in the month of December of 2010, using half-structuralized and recorded interview. The recorded interviews were transcribed and the data analyzed and organized in two categories.

Results: It was demonstrated that many participants were unaware about the studied subject. The majority of the participants told that there was no orientation regarding preventive and control measures of HI during the period they accompanied the child. However, they describe practical preventive actions as the adequate hygiene of the hands, as well as the use of alcohol.

Conclusion: It is evidenced the need to develop continuous educational strategies directed to both companions and professionals of the investigated unit in order to obtain more accurate actions in the prevention and control of hospital infection.
