Abstract

The process of economic integration has several goals and among them we can mention the exploitation of economies of scale, stimulus to investment and advantages of specialization. MERCOSUR emerged as an option to the increasing marginalization of Latin America in the global economic system. In most blocks arising after the experience of the European Union, which has followed each development itself, as in the case of MERCOSUR. The powerful European example, by its spectacular success can not be replicated anywhere in the world for several reasons, and initially by their own regional differences in which each country is located. MERCOSUR is a customs union only “imperfect”, is a political project and has its peculiarities. In its first years of existence the block significantly increased trade between its members, however, seems to be experiencing a crisis, since it can not deepen agreed in the Treaty of Asuncion and replaced by democracy as a threat to their market recognition internationally.
