Abstract

This paper presents an evaluation in the ostrich (Struthio camelus) productive and reproductive performances in the municipality of Santiago, west Rio Grande do Sul State, Brazil. The ostrich has been suffering many different economic problems, and the primary production has been very affected, it takes the producers to find different ways to survive. The ratites exportation has been considered an efficient way to look for the castle breeding alternatives. The mainly purpose in this research is to evaluate the productive and reproductive performances of Struthio camelus in the west of Rio Grande do Sul. This research was developed in the Poultry Keeping Sector from the Biology and Agricultural Engineering Department from URI, Santiago. After the election it was observed in these aspects: 1) The initial youngling weight did not have any correlation with the incubation numbers of the days; 2) The Struthio camelus death taxes were 61,8%, the minor survive tax was registered in the eggs from the area P2, and this can be the eggs handling consequence since the position till the lab. This research suggests for the Small Farmers that the ostrich creation is not advantageous. Keywords: Ratitas, ostrich, animal production, artificial incubation.
