ASSESSMENT OF 2-PHENOXYETHANOL AND BENZOCAINE AS ANESTHETICS FOR FIELD PROCEDURES IN MATRINXÃ Brycon cephalus (Günther, 1869)

Abstract

Matrinxã Brycon cephalus is a Characidae species from Brazil that has been reared in our fish farms with excellent growth and feed conversion ratios. Furthermore, matrinxã has good characteristics for sport fishing industry that requires aggressive and fierce fish to attack fish baits. However, matrinxã management has been complicated by the intensive movements that fish does during handling and other field procedures as biometry, tags and surgeries. 2-henoxyethanol and benzocaine have been indicated in matrinxã handling, but little information is available about matrinxã responses to such anesthetics. The present work evaluated the biochemical and physiological responses of matrinxã exposed to 2-phenoxyethanol and benzocaine through the values of blood hematocrit, and plasma values of glucose, lactate, total ammonia, ions (Na+, Cl-, K+) and protein. Both, 2-phenoxyethanol and benzocaine, were suitable to induce anesthesia in matrinxã (Benzocaine – 20 mg/L, 2-phenoxyethanol – 250 mg/L), but only benzocaine could be indicated to induce deep anesthesia (Benzocaina – 60 mg/L, 2-phenoxyethanol – 600 mg/L) in matrinxã.
