Abstract

The material comes from the late Pleistocene Touro Passo Formation, Uruguaiana, RS, and it consists of a partial skull lacking the posterior portion, and with the complete molar series. Comparative studies were made with of Brasiliochoerus stenocephalus, Catagonus wagneri and Tayassu pecari. The specimen presents a similar size to the Catagonus and Brasiliochoerus, being slightly larger than Tayassu. Characters interpreted as being of the “Catagonus group” are also recorded in the fossil Tayassu. Some characters suggesting its attribution to the Tayassu, are the absence of continuous basal cingulum in the molars, the form characteristic of the rostrum, which is enlarged and prolonged and molars with vestige of accessory cusps.
