Abstract

The present study evaluated the effects of quicklime on water quality and performance of juvenile pintado. Sixteen fiber glass tanks (0.4 m x 0.4 m x 0.3 m; 40 l) were used for 28 days, and initial population density was 40 fish/tank. Quicklime levels were 0 g/m3, 5 g/m3, 10 g/m3 and 15 g/m3, and 4 repetitions to each one were used. Initial fish weight and length were calculated in a random sample, and values were respectively 0.57 g ± 0.17 g and 4.65 cm ± 0.44 cm. Water alkalinity, hardness and pH values were progressive as quicklime levels (P < 0.05). Data variability on fish survival did not allow to detect significant differences among the tanks. However, descriptive examinations indicated quicklime intensively tended to improve fish survival. So it can be suggest quicklime is an important product to be used in the water quality management of intensive production of juvenile pintado.
