Abstract

Because of the low altitude flight and birds concentration, most part of the bird strike events occur near the airport. This paper focuses on the role of the biologist in the control of bird hazard and aims to describe activities performed by this professional regarding the bird hazard management in airports. To this end, we reviewed the literature related to the topic, identified the applicable regulations and practices adopted. Through case study on airport located in Brazilian Amazon region was possible to collect data and information for the research. The results indicates that the main biologist activities is related to hazard identification process, including identifying bird attractants, species of bird in the airport environment and behavior habits of the birds. Furthermore, the biologist assists the risk assessment with information on the likelihood of collisions and severity of their consequences.
