The Origins of the Books of Samuel: ‘Status Quaestionis’

This article studies the hypotheses about the formation of the books of Samuel and focuses on discussing their belonging to the Deuteronomistic History and the origin of the Succession Narrative. The history of the diachronic research on 1-2 Samuel through its current state is presented in its diversity and evaluated. It is
concluded that despite the lack of consensus among scholars the diachronic research on the origins of 1-2 Samuel unveiled many relevant features of these books, and that this kind of inquiry is still needed.
