This article identifies a greater concern with language in the characteristics of José Saramago’s fictional production of the end of the century, thus suggesting that it comes to occupy the central place that previously belonged to historical discourse in his novels. From this, the analysis focuses on the work Todos os Nomes, from 1997, in which it is possible to suppose dialogues between Saramago’s narrator and Borges’ narrative constitutions, as well as other philosophical reflections by authors such as Roland Barthes, Jacques Derrida and Michel Foucault. The main reflection that this article is dedicated to is the possible concern of Saramago in relation to the problem of the representation of reality through language.
