Globalization. Economic crisis. Contemporary portuguese novel.Abstract
This essay explores the theme of globalization, based on the novel O verão de 2012 (The summer of 2012), by the Portuguese writer Paulo Varela Gomes. The text is developed in two moments. First, the theme of globalization and its effects are discussed theoretically drawing on important intellectuals such as Fredric Jameson, Pierre Bourdieu, Octavio Ianni, among others. Then, the novel by Paulo Varela Gomes is examined by extracting passages in which the author, through a narrator affected by the disease, discusses the economic crisis in Portugal and the effects of neoliberal policies put into execution by the State. The consequences of globalization on Portuguese territory are also looked at.
