Abstract:
For Joaquim Nabuco, slavery was the cause of Brazil’s cultural and socio-economic underdevelopment. Thus, in his “mandato abolicionista” (abolitionist term), he sought to advocate not only in favor of the slaves and their children (“ingênuos”), but also in favor of the economic elites which, devoid of class conscience, ignored their true political and social duties (“funções sociais”) to the country.
