SKEPTICISM AND RELIGION IN MICHEL DE MONTAIGNE: TWO INTERPRETATIONS OF APOLOGY FOR RAYMOND SEBOND
Abstract
The goal of this text is to reflect about the relation between skepticism and religion in Michel de Montaigne. The paper intends to underline the problematic coexistence of both of these spheres within the text of the Renaissance philosopher, starting from de exposure of two opposite interpretations of the Apology for Raymond Sebond. If for one side this essay was ridden for many as a text that reaches success in its propose in defending traditional religion, in response to the arguments of the Protestant Reform, for the other side, many interpreters saw in this essay a earnest critics to Christian religion and its rituals. For better clarifying each of these positions, it will be highlighted the mainly passages of the Apology that based their argumentations. Key words: Skepticism. Religion. Fideism.Downloads
